How to Beat Food Guilt?

So many of us out there share feelings of guilt, regret and shame after indulging in our favourite treat foods. The truth is that sustainable healthy eating is all about balance and is not about restricting or 'cutting out' the foods that we enjoy and love. Since food is something that brings people together, it is important to allow yourself to have those enjoyable treat foods every now and then, without feeling guilty. However, it is important to stay mindful about the portion sizes and quantities you’re consuming those treat foods in.

Obsessing over that forth square of chocolate or that extra slice of pizza isn't worth it, meaning that we need to have a better mindset and not worry so much. We're constantly told in the media to look and appear a certain way and to consume certain foods, follow new fads and trendy diets, some of which are endorsed by celebrities. But the bottom line is that these are media ploys and marketing strategies and tricks to promote products, diets and an unhealthy/unstainable body image and eating pattern.

Advice to beat food guilt could include trying to follow the 90:10 rule, where 90% of the time you consume a healthy balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and 10% of the time treat yourself to the foods that you love and enjoy, even if they might not be the healthiest options. This strategy is good for your mental health, in terms of relieving related stress and anxiety, and ensures a sustainable healthy eating pattern, by beating food guilt!
